El mapa
Elk River sits where its namesake stream flows into the Mississippi, on the northwest edge of the Twin Cities region. On a map, the confluence is the anchor. The Elk River curls in from the north, the Mississippi runs broad along the southern side, and the older streets of downtown gather in the angle between them. As the seat of Sherburne County, the town has since grown well beyond that first corner.
Upstream, a dam on the Elk River holds back Lake Orono, a long, irregular reservoir that appears as a pale ribbon of water threaded through residential blocks and parkland. US Highways 10 and 169 cross the city and meet near its centre, and a railway line follows the Mississippi. Beyond them the street pattern loosens into curving subdivisions, wooded lots and open farmland.
Along the Mississippi lies the Oliver Kelley Farm, home of the founder of the Grange farmers' movement and now a living-history site. An Elk River map poster reduces all of this to line and space: the confluence, the lake, the crossing highways and the looser grid around them. The result is a quiet outline of a river town at the edge of a metropolitan area.

A dam on the Elk River created this reservoir. Its narrow, branching shape winds through neighbourhoods and parkland just upstream of the confluence.
US Highways 10 and 169 meet inside the city, and together with the railway along the Mississippi they draw the strongest straight lines on the map.
