Eltville am Rhein lies on the right bank of the Rhine in the Rheingau, west of Wiesbaden. From above, the town is a long, narrow shape following the river: a historic centre by the water, a riverside promenade, and newer districts reaching back toward the slopes, where vineyards cover the land in fine, parallel rows before the Taunus forest begins.
The electoral castle by the river, once a residence of the archbishops of Mainz, is the town's best-known landmark, and its rose gardens have given Eltville a reputation as a town of roses. Eltville is also known for sparkling wine production and for its link to Johannes Gutenberg, who spent time here late in his life. Kloster Eberbach lies in the hills nearby.
