Erlang lies in the Chongqing municipality, in the rolling hill country of the eastern Sichuan Basin. From above, the landscape is anything but flat: low hills, valleys and terraced slopes shape where roads can go and where houses can be built, and the town's streets bend to follow the contours rather than cutting a straight grid.
The built-up area is compact, clustered along main roads and across the more level ground, with farmland, ponds and scattered hamlets filling the countryside around it. Winding rural roads connect the town to its neighbours across the hills.
