El mapa
From above, Esztergom sits on the right bank of the Danube, where the river marks the border between Hungary and Slovakia. The town gathers around a steep hill on the water's edge. A side arm of the river cuts off a long, thin island. Across the main channel, the town of Štúrovo mirrors it on the Slovak shore. The result is a map with a strong horizontal line of water and a dense cluster pressed against it.
The hill is the heart of the drawing. Its summit carries the basilica, the largest church in Hungary and the seat of the country's archbishop. Below it, a small quarter of short streets runs down to the riverbank. Esztergom was a royal seat in the early centuries of the Hungarian kingdom, and the old core still keeps close to the castle rock. The newer districts spread in looser blocks toward the hills to the south.
An Esztergom map poster works because the elements are few and clearly placed: the broad river, the slim island, the hill with its fortified plateau, and the bridge linking two countries. Wooded ridges close in toward the Danube Bend and leave open ground at the edges of the sheet. In black and white, the river stands out as the one wide open space, and the town reads as a fine web of streets on either side.

A steep rise right beside the river holds the basilica and the remains of the royal castle. On the map it shows up as a compact, closed shape with a few roads climbing toward the top.
This bridge links Esztergom to Štúrovo. It was destroyed in the Second World War and rebuilt in 2001. It is the one clear line joining the two banks, and a small detail that tells the town's story.

Por qué Esztergom
Esztergom means a lot to people with Hungarian roots, to anyone who has climbed up to the basilica, and to anyone who has crossed the bridge on foot into another country. The map gives that river-and-hill setting a quiet, graphic form that suits a hallway, a study or a gift for someone who grew up here.
