Étampes lies in the Essonne department, about fifty kilometres south of Paris. Several small rivers, including the Juine, the Chalouette and the Louette, meet here in a narrow valley cut into the Beauce plateau. On a map the town stretches along the valley floor in a long, thin shape, its streets following the water while the slopes rise on either side.
Above the town stands the Tour de Guinette, the ruined keep of a twelfth-century royal castle, notable for its unusual four-lobed plan. Below it, the old centre is packed with churches, including the fortified collegiate church of Notre-Dame-du-Fort. Its narrow lanes and courtyards belong to a town that was once an important royal stop on the road south.
Beyond the valley, the land opens out onto the flat, cultivated Beauce, which the map draws as large field parcels. An Étampes map poster shows this contrast between the tight, river-shaped town and the broad plateau around it. The railway to Paris runs down the valley like a spine.

The twelfth-century keep stands on the slope above the station. Its four-lobed ruin is a landmark visible from much of the town and clearly marked on detailed maps.
