Évreux is the prefecture of the Eure department in Normandy and sits in the valley of the Iton. The river splits into several arms as it passes the centre, so on a map thin lines of water weave between streets, gardens and old walls. The historic core fills the valley floor, and newer districts climb onto the plateaux on either side.
The town dates back to Roman Gaul, when it was called Mediolanum Aulercorum, and a stretch of late Roman wall still runs beside the river. Notre-Dame cathedral rises above the centre, and a fifteenth-century clock tower stands nearby. A riverside walk follows the Iton past the ramparts, one of the town's most familiar routes.
