Hill-following roads
Roads around Faratsiho bend and curve with the terrain of the central highlands. On the poster they have a flowing, hand-drawn quality that no planned grid could match.

El mapa
Faratsiho sits in the Vakinankaratra region of Madagascar's central highlands, west of the Ankaratra massif. At this altitude the land is rarely flat, and the map shows it. Roads loop and switch back to follow the contours, and the town spreads along ridges and gentle slopes rather than across an open plain. The pattern is organic, shaped far more by terrain than by planning.
Like much of the highlands, the surrounding area is farmed, with rice in the valley bottoms and other crops on the slopes. On a map the cultivated low ground appears as smooth open space threaded by small streams, in contrast to the scattered settlements on higher ground. A Faratsiho map poster records that close relationship between hills, water and farming.
In black and white the streets become thin, irregular lines, and the streams draining off the hills add fine detail between them. There is no grid here, only paths that make sense on the ground. To anyone who knows the town, those shapes are instantly familiar. To everyone else, they make an unusually graceful piece of cartography.

Low ground between the hills is used for rice, as is typical of Madagascar's highlands. On the map these valleys read as calm open bands between the more densely marked higher land.
The town lies on the western side of the Ankaratra massif, one of Madagascar's major volcanic ranges. The land rising to the east shapes the drainage and road patterns across the map.
