Fonte Boa lies in the state of Amazonas in Brazil, along the Solimões, as the upper Amazon River is called in Brazil. From above, the landscape is dominated by water. The broad river, its side channels and lakes, and the flooded forest wrap around a small town set on ground high enough to stay dry through the seasonal floods.
Like many settlements in the western Amazon, Fonte Boa has no road link to the rest of the country. People and goods arrive by boat along the river or by air, and the rise and fall of the water sets the rhythm of daily life. The town serves the riverside communities scattered through the surrounding forest.
A Fonte Boa map poster shows that isolation plainly. The short street grid of the town is the only dense patch in the frame. Around it, river channels and oxbow lakes curve in every direction. In black and white it looks almost like an island, a small settlement held in place by water and forest.
