Fuyu is a county-level city in Jilin province, administered by Songyuan, in the north of the province near the border with Heilongjiang. It sits on the broad Songnen Plain, one of northeast China's main farming regions, and the landscape around it is almost perfectly flat. That flatness gives the city a clean, regular plan of straight streets and rectangular blocks.
The Songhua River runs to the north, forming the boundary with Heilongjiang, and the surrounding countryside is divided into large, geometric fields. On a map the pattern repeats at two scales: the urban grid of the centre, and the wider grid of farm roads and field boundaries that extends in every direction toward the horizon.
A Fuyu map poster is a lesson in order. There are few curves, apart from the river in the distance and the occasional rail line, so the design depends on proportion and rhythm.
