The land is almost completely flat, and from above the town has a clear, regular structure. The main roads meet at right angles and divide the built-up area into rectangular blocks of housing, workshops and shops.
Water is everywhere on the map. Canals, drainage ditches and ponds criss-cross the countryside, many of them dead straight, forming a grid that mirrors the roads.
