Gap sits in a broad basin in the Southern Alps and serves as the prefecture of the Hautes-Alpes. It is often described as the highest prefecture town in France, at around 735 metres. The small Luye river crosses the town, and the Durance valley lies a short distance away. On a map, a dense, rounded old centre sits in the middle of a basin ringed by mountain roads.
The historic core is a knot of narrow, curving streets around the cathedral, with the later town spreading out on all sides.
