El mapa
Gay lies in the east of Orenburg Oblast, in open steppe north of Orsk. It was founded in the mid-twentieth century to serve a large copper deposit, and its map follows that purpose. A compact planned town of straight avenues and apartment blocks sits on one side, and the industrial land of the mining works lies on the other. Almost nothing on the map comes from before the mine.
The local mining and processing plant works one of the most important copper deposits in Russia. From above, the open-pit quarry is unmistakable. It is a huge excavation surrounded by spoil heaps and haul roads, and it covers an area comparable to the residential town itself.
A Gay map poster shows the town exactly as it was designed: a residential grid next to industry, with open steppe all around. The clean geometry suits the Blueprint style, and the contrast between the orderly streets and the rough outline of the quarry gives the composition weight.
The residential area follows a regular plan of wide streets and apartment blocks, a clear example of a Soviet-era company town.
The copper quarry forms a large, sharply defined shape near the town, surrounded by spoil dumps and service roads that reach out into the steppe.
Beyond the town and the mine the land is flat and open, so the edges of the print are mostly white space broken by a few roads and tracks.
