Gejiu lies in the mountains of southern Yunnan, in the Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture. From above, the city is squeezed into a long, narrow valley. Its streets run lengthwise along the valley floor and climb in tight curves up the steep slopes on either side. At the centre sits Jinhu, a lake around which much of the city is arranged.
Gejiu is known as China's tin capital. Tin has been mined in the surrounding mountains for centuries, and the industry shaped the city's growth, economy and identity. The lake and the parks along its shore give the dense, working city a calm centre, and from the surrounding heights the town appears as a compact band of buildings enclosed by green ridges.
