El mapa
Guelendeng stands on the Logone River in the Mayo-Kebbi Est region of southwestern Chad. On a map the river is the defining line. Its broad channel bends past the town, with sandbars, side channels and seasonal wetlands spread across the flat ground beside it. The far bank is Cameroon, so the water is also an international border, and the town reads as a settlement looking across at its neighbour.
The streets do not follow a formal grid. Lanes and tracks run out from a central area toward the fields, and walled compounds fill the irregular blocks between them. The main road north toward N'Djamena and south toward Bongor draws the one strong straight line in the plan. A Guelendeng map poster turns that contrast between the straight road, the looser lanes and the winding river into the whole composition.
The land around the town is part of the wide Logone basin. The rains swell the river each year and flood low ground, and farming and fishing follow the seasons. In black and white the floodplain shows as quiet space around the built-up area, broken only by water channels and the faint lines of footpaths. The result is a spare, horizontal map, very different from the dense plan of a larger city.
The river curves along the town's western side. Its channels, islands and sandbanks make the most expressive shapes on the sheet and mark the border between Chad and Cameroon.
The road linking Guelendeng with N'Djamena and Bongor cuts a clear, steady stroke through the informal street pattern and gives the map its main axis.
Beyond the houses the land opens into low, seasonally flooded ground. The poster leaves it as generous empty space, crossed only by tracks and water.
