From above, Guruvāyūr looks like a town built around a single point. Its streets gather toward the Sri Krishna Temple, and the temple compound and its tank sit at the centre of a small, close grid. Outside that core, the roads loosen and thin out into the low, green country of Thrissur district, where houses, groves and waterways share the flat ground.
The temple is among the most visited pilgrimage sites in South India, and it shapes the town more than anything else. The temple's elephants are kept at Punnathur Kotta, a former palace compound a short distance from the town centre.
