Hacıqabul lies on the Shirvan plain in central Azerbaijan, part of the wide lowland drained by the Kura River. The land around the town is very flat, and a map makes that obvious: long straight roads, rectangular fields and irrigation channels run to the horizon with almost nothing to bend them.
Lake Hacıqabul lies close to the town and is its biggest natural feature, a large open body of water with low, soft shores. Next to the tight street pattern of the town, the lake's plain outline adds weight to the composition and fixes the town firmly in the landscape.
The town grew as a railway junction, where lines from Baku divide toward the west and the south. The tracks and sidings cut long diagonals through the plan.
