Halvad is a town in the Morbi district of Gujarat, on the flat country close to the Little Rann of Kutch. From above, the older part of town is a dense, irregular tangle of lanes, typical of historic settlements in the region. Newer streets and roads spread out from it more loosely, and beyond the edges the landscape opens into farmland and eventually the vast, pale flats of the Rann.
The town has a long history as one of the seats of the Jhala rulers of the area, and water has always mattered here. A lake and old palace buildings form part of the historic core. On the map, the water body reads as a smooth shape set against the fine texture of the lanes around it.
