Hartley sits in northwest Kent, south of Longfield and within easy reach of Dartford and the Thames. It is a village that grew outward over the twentieth century, and its map shows it clearly: a loose network of lanes and residential roads, with houses set back behind gardens and larger plots breaking up the pattern.
The countryside is never far away. Fields, hedgerows and patches of woodland press in on all sides, and narrow country lanes wander off toward neighbouring hamlets. The ground rises toward the North Downs, and the road layout follows gentle folds in the land rather than any strict plan.
