Hilchenbach lies in the Siegerland, in the far southeast of North Rhine-Westphalia, where the land rises into the Rothaar Mountains. From above, the town looks less like one center than a chain of districts following the valley. Houses and roads fill the flat ground, and woodland takes over wherever the slopes get steeper.
The layout is set by water and terrain. Streets run along the length of the valley, while short side roads climb a little way into the hills and stop at the forest edge. The regional railway and the main road share the same corridor, so the map shows a compact band of settlement surrounded by large open areas that print as calm white space.
The Rothaarsteig, a long-distance hiking trail along the crest of the mountains, passes through the surrounding hills, and those forests are a large part of what defines the town.
