Hongzhou is a town in Liping County, in the Qiandongnan area of southeastern Guizhou, a hilly region with many Dong and Miao communities. Towns here grow where the valleys widen, and Hongzhou is no exception. On the map, the streets gather on flat ground along the water, and steep slopes rise immediately on every side.
The shape of the town follows the valley. Roads run parallel to the river and cross it at a few points, and the built-up area thins out quickly as the ground climbs. Beyond the town, narrow lanes switch back up the hillsides between terraced fields and woodland, reaching villages above.
