El mapa
Huddersfield stands where the River Colne meets the River Holme, in a valley cut into the eastern slopes of the Pennines. From above, the town centre is unmistakable: a compact core of Victorian streets enclosed by a ring road, with terraces and former mills spreading outward along the valley floors and up steep hillsides. The contours are never far away, and many roads follow them in long, bending lines.
Two canals shape the map. The Huddersfield Broad Canal heads north-east toward the Calder, while the Huddersfield Narrow Canal climbs west toward Standedge, the longest canal tunnel in Britain. Wool and textiles built the town, and its railway station, with its columned classical front, faces St George's Square. Rugby league traces its origins to a meeting held at the George Hotel on that same square in 1895.
A Huddersfield map poster brings together the ring road, the river valleys, the canals and the web of hillside streets linking outlying villages to the centre. Castle Hill, crowned by the Victoria Tower, rises to the south, and in black and white the whole landscape reads like an engraving of an industrial town set among hills.

The Broad Canal and the Narrow Canal meet close to the university. One runs toward the Calder, the other heads west through a long flight of locks toward Standedge and the Pennine crossing.
South of the centre, Castle Hill rises above the surrounding valleys. It is an ancient hillfort site topped by the Victoria Tower, and on the map it appears as a quiet island among winding lanes.
