Iaçu lies in the interior of Bahia, beside the Paraguaçu River, one of the main rivers of the state. On the map, the river gives the town its orientation, a wide curving line with the streets gathered along one bank. The terrain around is open and fairly dry, typical of the region between the coast and the sertão.
The town grew as a stop on a railway line, and the old rail corridor still cuts through the map in a long, straight line. The urban grid is compact, with a main square and church at the centre and residential streets spreading out toward the edges, where they meet farmland and scrub.
Beyond the town, the landscape opens into cattle pasture and scattered small farms, crossed by dirt roads. An Iaçu map poster shows how river, railway and street grid fit together in a small interior town, a pattern that is simple but carefully balanced.
