IJsselstein lies just south of Utrecht on the Hollandse IJssel, a narrow river that runs along the town's edge. On a map, the historic centre is a small, tightly defined shape, still outlined by old defensive waterways, with a few straight streets inside and the river close by. Around it, later neighbourhoods spread outward in the ordered patterns typical of Dutch planning.
The old town grew around a castle, and its surviving tower remains a local landmark. Just outside the town stands the Gerbrandytoren, a tall broadcasting tower that is the tallest structure in the Netherlands and visible across the flat surrounding polders.
An IJsselstein map poster shows the contrast between the compact medieval core and the newer residential districts around it, with canals and ditches threading through both. The river forms a gentle line along one side, and the surrounding pasture is marked with the fine straight lines of Dutch land drainage.
