Inongo sits on the eastern shore of Lake Mai-Ndombe, a broad, shallow lake in the forested lowlands of the Congo Basin. On a map the town reads as a narrow band of streets along the waterline, with the lake filling much of the frame as a plain, calm surface. The open water gives the whole composition a large empty space to work against.
As the capital of Mai-Ndombe province, Inongo is the administrative centre for a large and thinly populated region where the lake and its rivers have long served as roads. The street pattern is simple and spread out. Roads run parallel to the shore and branch inland towards the surrounding bush and farmland, then thin out into tracks.
