Jacareí sits in the Paraíba Valley of São Paulo state, between the metropolitan area of São Paulo and the city of São José dos Campos. On a map, the most distinctive feature is the Paraíba do Sul River, which loops through the municipality in wide, tight meanders that the streets must work around.
The old centre lies close to the river, with a small grid of streets around its main church and squares. Newer neighbourhoods climb the gentle hills on both banks, laid out in curving subdivisions and long avenues.
