El mapa
Jhumri Telaiya sits in the Koderma district of Jharkhand, on the uneven upland of the Chota Nagpur plateau. From above, the town is a loose cluster of lanes gathered around its main roads and railway line, with fields and low, scrubby hills pressing in from every side. The pattern is informal rather than planned. It is the kind of street network that grew outward from market roads over generations.
The name has travelled much further than the town itself. For decades, listeners here sent so many song requests to Indian radio programmes that Jhumri Telaiya became a household phrase across the country, shorthand for the devoted small-town fan. The surrounding district was also long associated with mica mining, and that industrial past still shapes the roads that lead out into the countryside.
Just outside town, the Barakar River was dammed at Tilaiya as one of the early projects of the Damodar Valley Corporation, and the reservoir's branching shoreline makes a striking shape on a map. A Jhumri Telaiya map poster keeps that relationship between town and water, drawing the dense core in fine black lines against the open ground around it.
The dam on the Barakar River holds back a wide reservoir whose fingers of water reach into the surrounding valleys, giving the edge of the map a dramatic, irregular outline.
The densest streets gather along the main roads and near the railway, where narrow lanes branch off in a tight, organic pattern that fills the centre of the print.
Beyond the built-up area, scattered villages, tracks and low hills of the Chota Nagpur plateau thin the linework out into a quieter, open texture.
