Jōetsu Map Poster
Jōetsu sits on the Sea of Japan coast of Niigata Prefecture, and its map combines two distinct centres. Near the coast lies the port district of Naoetsu, while inland the old castle town of Takada spreads around the moats of Takada Castle, joined by roads across the plain.
Takada Park, built around the castle's moats, is celebrated for its cherry blossoms, especially when lit at night. On the hills to the west stand the remains of Kasugayama Castle, the stronghold of the warlord Uesugi Kenshin.
A Jōetsu map poster also reflects a region of heavy winter snow. It was at Takada, in 1911, that the Austrian officer Theodor von Lerch introduced skiing to Japan. On paper, rivers, moats and coastline give the city a clear, readable structure.
