Jomvu lies on the mainland west of Mombasa Island and is one of the constituencies of Mombasa County. From above it is a place shaped by corridors. The main road to Nairobi and the railway lines leave the coast through this area, and neighbourhoods have grown along them in dense, informal patterns that fill the land between the routes and the water.
Tidal creeks reach inland here from the Indian Ocean, and their mangrove-fringed shores give the map an irregular, branching edge. The port and industrial activity of the Mombasa area spill into the surrounding districts, and many residents work along the transport corridor. It is a working part of the city, less visited than the old town but essential to how Mombasa runs.
