El mapa
Kairouan was founded around 670 as a military base during the Arab conquest of North Africa. It soon became one of the great religious and scholarly centres of the Islamic world. On a map its walled medina stands out immediately. A compact, roughly rectangular enclosure holds a dense web of narrow streets and cul-de-sacs, surrounded by the looser grid of the modern town.
In the northeast corner of the medina is the Great Mosque of Kairouan, also called the Mosque of Uqba. It is one of the oldest mosques in North Africa, and its large rectangular courtyard is visible from above. The medina and its monuments are listed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A Kairouan map poster can also include the Aghlabid Basins north of the medina. These large circular reservoirs were built in the ninth century to store water for the city. Their perfect round shapes are rare in any urban map, and they sit beside the old walls on a dry plain.
The historic city forms a compact enclosure of narrow, winding lanes, sharply outlined by its walls against the more regular streets around it.
The mosque's large rectangular courtyard and prayer hall occupy the northeast corner of the medina, one of the most important monuments in the Maghreb.
Circular reservoirs from the ninth century sit outside the walls, clean round shapes that show early medieval water engineering on the open plain.
