Kasli lies in the Chelyabinsk region, on the eastern slope of the Urals, in a landscape of lakes and pine forest. On the map, water dominates. The town stretches along the shore of a large lake, and more lakes appear nearby, their irregular outlines filling large areas of the page. The streets squeeze into the land between the water and the woods.
The town grew around an ironworks founded in the eighteenth century and became famous for Kasli iron casting. This is a tradition of fine decorative cast-iron sculpture, and a cast-iron pavilion made here won acclaim at the Paris Exposition of 1900. The factory area near the water is still visible in the town's layout.
