Kathu is one of the three districts of Phuket, and its town sits inland in a valley that runs between Phuket Town in the east and the beaches of the west coast. On a map the built-up area follows the valley floor. Green, hilly ground rises on both sides, and a few roads twist over the ridges.
Long before tourism, Kathu was a tin-mining centre, and that industry shaped early settlement on the island. The district also reaches the Andaman Sea at Patong, one of Phuket's best-known beach towns, so the same administrative area includes both a quiet inland town and a busy coastal strip.

Hill roads to Patong
Winding roads climb over the ridge toward Patong on the west coast. On the poster they show up as loose, curving lines across otherwise empty ground.
Tin-mining past
Kathu grew as one of Phuket's tin-mining towns. The older settlement pattern in the valley comes from that time, before the island turned to tourism.
