Kidal lies in northeastern Mali, in the Adrar des Ifoghas, a rocky upland region in the Sahara. The town sits in a valley surrounded by bare hills and wide sandy plains. On the map, its streets form a compact, fairly regular block pattern. Beyond them there is little but open desert, rock outcrops and the pale lines of dry riverbeds.
These wadis are the key to the landscape. They carry water only rarely, after the short rains, but they shape the terrain and cut long branching paths across the map. Kidal has long been an important centre for the Tuareg people of the region, and tracks lead out of town across the desert toward other settlements and wells.
