El mapa
Kitzbühel is a real town rather than a purpose-built resort, and the map shows it. At its heart is a small medieval core of two parallel main streets, Vorderstadt and Hinterstadt, lined with painted façades. Around it, streets spread out across the valley floor, the Kitzbüheler Ache flows through on its way north, and the railway curves around the town on its way through the Tyrol.
Kitzbühel became a town in the 13th century and grew wealthy from copper and silver mining before turning to skiing in the late 1800s. Each January the Hahnenkamm races are held on the Streif, one of the most demanding downhill courses on the World Cup circuit, which finishes close to the edge of town.
A Kitzbühel map poster frames the town between its two mountains, with the old town's tight oval at the centre and newer neighbourhoods fanning out along the roads. To the northwest the small Schwarzsee lake adds a quiet shape to the edge of the composition. It is a picture of a place that has been a town for centuries and a resort for a little over one.
The two parallel streets of the old town form a small lens shape on the map, a dense medieval core that contrasts with the wider plots around it.
The downhill course runs from the Hahnenkamm summit toward the valley, ending in a finish area near the town. On the map, the mountain appears as open ground rising from the western streets.
A small moorland lake northwest of the centre, popular for swimming in summer, it gives the map one of its few water shapes beyond the river and streams.
