The Kizu River
The river enters from the east through a narrow valley and turns north near the town of Kizu. Its wide bends and embankments are the clearest natural feature on the map.

El mapa
Kizugawa lies at the southern tip of Kyoto Prefecture, against the border with Nara. It takes its name from the Kizu River, which crosses it from east to west before turning north. The city was created in 2007 by merging the towns of Kizu, Kamo and Yamashiro, and the map still reads as three distinct parts.
Along the river, the older settlements follow roads and railway lines through a narrow valley. The hills to the south hold newer residential districts built as part of Kansai Science City. Their curving streets, cul-de-sacs and neat blocks sit on levelled ground, and the contrast between the two patterns is striking in black and white.
In the eastern Kamo area are the remains of Kuni-kyō, briefly the imperial capital in the 740s under Emperor Shōmu, and the temple of Jōruri-ji with its garden pond. A Kizugawa map poster combines river, valley and hills in a single frame: a place close to both Nara and Kyoto, yet distinctly its own.
The river enters from the east through a narrow valley and turns north near the town of Kizu. Its wide bends and embankments are the clearest natural feature on the map.
The planned districts on the southern hills have smooth, curving roads and orderly housing blocks. They stand in clear contrast to the older river settlements.
In the Kamo area, the site of the short-lived eighth-century capital lies in open land near the river. It is a quiet reminder of the region's early importance.
