El mapa
Kongsberg lies in the Numedal valley in southern Norway, on both sides of the Numedalslågen river. From above, the river runs roughly north to south through the town, with the old centre on its banks and bridges connecting the two halves. Forest-covered hills rise on each side, limiting how far the streets can spread.
The town was founded in 1624 by King Christian IV after silver was found in the nearby hills, and silver mining shaped it for more than three centuries. Kongsberg Church, one of the largest baroque churches in Norway, stands in the centre, and the Royal Norwegian Mint is based here.
A Kongsberg map poster shows the river as the central line of the design, with the Nybrufossen waterfall close to the middle of town. Streets follow the valley sides, and the surrounding woodland leaves plenty of open space, making the town's long, river-based shape easy to read.
The river splits the town into east and west halves, with several bridges crossing it and the waterfall marking the centre.
The historic centre around the church keeps a compact street pattern dating from the silver-mining era, dense compared with newer outer areas.
Wooded slopes close in on both sides, so residential streets climb in terraces and then stop where the forest begins.
