Kongtan sits in the hilly southern part of the Sichuan Basin, within reach of Zigong. The land here is rarely flat for long. Low hills and terraced slopes shape where roads can go, so streets bend with the contours and settlement gathers along valley floors and gentler ground.
The surrounding region is known for Zigong, a city with a long history of brine salt production and a well-known tradition of lantern festivals. Kongtan belongs to that wider landscape of rural towns, farmland and river valleys that links the larger cities of southern Sichuan.
