Kōshi lies just north-east of Kumamoto city in Kyushu, on flat land that begins to rise toward the Aso highlands further east. It was formed in 2006 by merging two towns, and the map still shows several separate centres, not a single core. Residential streets sit among fields, with clear boundaries between them.
The area is known for agriculture, and farmland is part of the city's identity. From above, the rectangular fields and the looser suburban street pattern create a varied, layered texture. Main roads and a railway line cross the land and tie the districts together.
