Kyrenia sits on the northern coast of Cyprus, on a narrow strip of land between the sea and the Kyrenia mountain range. The old town wraps around a small, nearly enclosed harbour. The newer town spreads east and west along the coast and up the lower slopes. On a map, the mountains press the town into a long coastal band.
The harbour is the focal point: a curved basin lined with buildings and closed on its eastern side by Kyrenia Castle, a fortress rebuilt by the Venetians. The castle houses the Kyrenia ship, a merchant vessel from the fourth century BC recovered from the seabed nearby. Around the old centre, the streets climb and bend to fit the terrain.
The ridge rises steeply just behind the town. The ruins of St Hilarion Castle stand on its heights, and Bellapais Abbey sits on the slopes to the south-east.
