El mapa
Lazarevac lies about fifty kilometres south of central Belgrade, in the valley of the Kolubara river, and forms one of the capital's outer municipalities. On a map the town appears as a compact centre with a regular street pattern, bordered by small rivers, farmland and the large open-cast lignite mines that shape the wider basin.
The town is named after Prince Lazar, and its best-known building is the Church of St. Dimitrije, whose crypt holds the remains of soldiers from the Battle of Kolubara in the First World War. The Kolubara coal basin nearby is one of Serbia's main energy sources, and its mines cover large areas of land.
A Lazarevac map poster shows a town surrounded by a strongly shaped landscape. The streets of the centre, the curving rivers and the broad, stepped outlines of the mines form contrasting textures. It is a fitting portrait for those with roots in the Kolubara valley.

Large open-cast lignite mines lie in the surrounding basin, their wide stepped shapes forming striking patterns on the map.
Small rivers wind through the area toward the Kolubara, adding curving lines between the town, fields and villages.
