Lichuan lies in the mountains of western Hubei, in Enshi Prefecture, near the border with Chongqing. From above, the city is squeezed into a valley, with streets and buildings following the valley floor and river, while steep ridges rise on each side. Roads curve with the terrain, and the built-up area thins quickly as the land climbs into forest and farmland.
The region is home to Tujia communities and is known for its karst landscape, including the large Tenglong Cave system. Lichuan is also known in botany: in the 1940s, living dawn redwood trees, previously known only from fossils, were identified in the area. The trees drew scientific attention from around the world and remain a point of local pride.
