Lingcheng lies in the northern part of Jiangsu province, on the broad, low plain of the Huai river basin. The landscape here is very flat and has been shaped by centuries of water management. The map is ordered, almost diagrammatic: long straight channels, rectangular fields, and roads running beside the waterways.
The town itself is a compact cluster within that pattern. Its main street is lined with shops, residential blocks sit behind it, and newer development runs along the roads leading out. Villages dot the surrounding fields at regular intervals, each a small knot of buildings linked to the others by paths along the canals.
