Linghai is a county-level city administered by Jinzhou in western Liaoning, a short distance inland from the northern shore of the Bohai Sea. The land here is broad and largely level, and the city's plan follows suit, with long straight roads meeting at right angles and blocks of fairly even size spreading outward from the centre.
The Daling River passes close to the city on its way south to the Bohai, and it is the clearest natural feature on the map. Around the urban area, farmland divides the plain into a patchwork of rectangular fields and village clusters, linked by rural roads that often continue the orientation of the city's own streets.
