Lisieux lies in the Pays d'Auge in Normandy, on the river Touques. From above, the town fills a valley. The river and its channels run through the lower streets, while the ground rises to the south-east, where the domed Basilica of Sainte-Thérèse stands above the rooftops. Beyond the edges, the landscape changes to hedgerows and orchards.
Lisieux is best known as the home of Thérèse of Lisieux, the Carmelite nun canonised in 1925. Her basilica, completed in the mid-twentieth century, is one of the largest churches built in France during that century and still draws pilgrims. The old Saint-Pierre Cathedral survived the heavy bombing of 1944, which destroyed much of the historic centre.

Much of the core was rebuilt after 1944 around the surviving cathedral. It pairs a medieval anchor with postwar street blocks.
