Segara Anak crater lake
Inside Rinjani's caldera the crescent lake Segara Anak curves around a younger cone, Gunung Barujari, and in simple black and white lines it reads as a ring inside a ring.

El mapa
Lombok lies directly east of Bali, across the deep Lombok Strait, and on a map it looks like a compact, roughly square island. The massif of Mount Rinjani fills the northern half, and its contour lines close into a caldera that holds the crescent-shaped lake Segara Anak. South of the mountain the land flattens into a central plain of rice fields, with roads running across it between the island's towns.
The west coast has the most street detail. Mataram, the provincial capital, has grown together with neighbouring Ampenan and Cakranegara into one continuous grid. A coastal road winds north past Senggigi toward the three small Gili islands off the northwest tip. On the south coast the shoreline breaks into a row of headlands and sheltered bays around Kuta, a pattern that looks almost hand-drawn in black and white.
Rinjani rises to over 3,700 metres and is the second-highest volcano in Indonesia. The strait beside the island marks part of the Wallace Line, the biogeographic boundary between Asian and Australian fauna. A Lombok Island map poster shows both scales at once: the single volcanic cone at the centre and, around its edge, the fine coastal detail of coves, fishing villages and offshore islets.
Inside Rinjani's caldera the crescent lake Segara Anak curves around a younger cone, Gunung Barujari, and in simple black and white lines it reads as a ring inside a ring.
Three small, flat islands sit in a short row off the northwest coast: Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. They give a quiet counterpoint to the mountainous mass of the main island.
Around Kuta the south coast runs as a sequence of curved bays and rocky points. Each bay is a clean arc, which gives the bottom edge of the map a rhythmic, scalloped outline.
