Lucheng is the seat of Lujiang County in Anhui, under the administration of Hefei. From above, the town sits on low, well-watered ground south of Chao Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in China. Its older centre forms a tight cluster of short streets, and newer districts spread outward in larger rectangular blocks with broad avenues between them.
Water is everywhere in this part of Anhui, and the map shows it. Small ponds, channels and reservoirs break up the farmland around the town, and hills begin to rise towards the southwest. The contrast between the flat, gridded fields and the uneven higher ground gives the drawing a clear sense of direction, with the lake plain on one side and rougher country on the other.
