Ludlow lies in western Massachusetts, just east of Springfield, with the Chicopee River forming its northern boundary. From above, the town's historic centre sits close to the river, where mill buildings and dams once powered local industry. Beyond it, streets spread outward into a looser, suburban pattern among woods and ponds.
In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Ludlow's mills were known for their jute and textile production, and the large mill complex by the river remains a defining feature of the town. The Massachusetts Turnpike also crosses Ludlow, its long curve cutting across the map and marking the town's connection to the wider region.
