Luolong is in southern Sichuan, in the hilly country around Yibin, where the upper Yangtze gathers its tributaries. The landscape is made of rounded hills, narrow valleys and terraced fields. On a map, the town looks like a compact cluster following the lower ground, with roads curving along the contours.
The main streets form a dense centre, and newer development extends along the valley roads. Outside the town, farmland is divided into small, irregular plots shaped by the slopes, and small watercourses and ponds scatter across the area. A Luolong map poster shows that fine, stepped texture, very different from the flat grids of northern Chinese cities.
The region is known for agriculture and for its position on the river routes of the upper Yangtze, which have connected Sichuan with the rest of China for centuries.
