El mapa
Mai Dịch lies in Cầu Giấy district on the western side of Hanoi, where the city's older core gives way to newer blocks and wide arterial roads. From above, the ward reads as a fine mesh of alleys packed between a few long, straight avenues. Plots are small and irregular, and the lanes branch, bend and dead-end in the way typical of neighbourhoods that grew out of former village land.
The strongest line on the map is Phạm Văn Đồng, a wide road that forms part of Hanoi's ring road system and runs north to south through the ward. Around it, the street pattern changes scale abruptly, from multi-lane carriageways to paths barely wide enough for a motorbike. That contrast between large infrastructure and intimate lanes is what gives a Mai Dịch map poster its texture.
The ward is best known nationally for Mai Dịch Cemetery, where many senior figures of the Vietnamese state are buried. On a map it appears as a calm, clearly bounded block amid the density around it. University campuses and the stadium district of Mỹ Đình lie close by, so the surrounding sheet mixes quiet green rectangles with the busy grain of residential Hanoi.
Phạm Văn Đồng cuts a broad, straight line through the ward, part of the ring system that carries traffic around western Hanoi and frames the finer streets on either side.
Mai Dịch Cemetery forms a distinct walled parcel, its orderly internal paths standing out against the irregular lanes and tightly packed houses that surround it on the map.
Between the main roads, hundreds of narrow alleys branch and fold into one another, producing the fine, almost hand-drawn grain that prints so well in black and white.

Por qué Mai Dịch
For people who studied, worked or grew up in Cầu Giấy, this map holds the daily routes of a very specific corner of Hanoi: the lane to the market, the turn off the ring road, the walk to class. It is a quiet record of a place usually experienced at speed.
