El mapa

Malaba Map Poster

Malaba lies in eastern Uganda, right on the border with Kenya, facing a Kenyan town of the same name across the line. It is one of the main crossings on the Northern Corridor. This transport route carries goods between the port of Mombasa and Uganda, and on to countries further inland.

The map is organised around movement. The highway comes in from the west and reaches the border post, and the railway line runs close by, crossing the frontier as part of the historic route from the coast. Long lines of trucks often wait along the road, and the town has grown alongside them.

A Malaba map poster shows how a border shapes a place. Streets cluster where road and rail meet, and they thin out quickly into the farmland around them. The border is invisible on the ground, but the way the two towns face each other across it makes the map unusual.

01

The border crossing

The frontier between Uganda and Kenya runs through the area and divides two towns sharing one name. The crossing point is the centre of the map.

02

Northern Corridor road

The main highway to the coast reaches the border here. On the map, it is the strongest line and the reason the town grew.

03

Railway line

The railway crosses the border near the road, part of the long route from Mombasa inland. Its steady line runs parallel to the busy highway.
