El mapa
Mandi sits at a point where the Beas river bends through a narrow valley in Himachal Pradesh. On a map, the river is the dominant form, a broad pale curve with bridges crossing to the far bank, and the town fills the available land in a dense, irregular web of lanes that climb away from the water.
The terrain is steep, so roads switch back and forth up the hillsides, and the town stretches along the valley rather than outward. A tributary stream joins the Beas here, adding another line of water, and the main highway toward Kullu and Manali follows the river through town before continuing north.
Mandi is known for its many old temples, which have earned it the nickname Chhoti Kashi, and for its week-long International Shivratri Fair. A Mandi map poster shows how closely the town is bound to its river, with streets that follow the shape of the valley.
The river sweeps through Mandi in a wide curve, its banks lined with ghats and temples and crossed by bridges that connect the two sides of town.
The historic centre is a dense, irregular pattern of narrow streets around the market square, with temples tucked among houses and shops.
Roads zigzag up the steep valley slopes, drawing sharp switchbacks that give the edges of the map a distinctive mountain texture.

Por qué Mandi
Mandi means a lot to people from the town and to the many travellers who pass through on the way to Kullu and beyond. The river curve and steep lanes make an image that feels unmistakably Himalayan even in simple lines.
